Just landed in Sydney and not sure what to do? Up for an adventure in the great wilderness of Australia? Or simply want to travel out of Sydney City with likeminded photographers and wanderers and get the opportunity to meet up new hiking and photography buddies? (Or maybe even hikers that like photography)
WAIT NO LONGER… Because UNSW PhotoClub is collaborating with our friends at UNSW Wandering Society to bring YOU to the Blue Mountains.
Off the tourist trails of Katoomba, Wentworth Falls and Leura, Hazelbrook provides a more authentic Australian bush experience within the globally acclaimed and World Heritage Listed Blue Mountains just over an hour west of Sydney.
On this trip, expect sweeping views of rugged treelined mountainsides, beautiful flowing waterfalls and a good workout trekking through bushland. Get close to Australian Wildlife and native plants on this trip with us.
We’ll be travelling on the Intercity Train meeting at Central Grand Concourse at 08:00 on the day up to Hazelbrook Train station where we will split into smaller groups and hike through the bushland in the Hazelbrook area. Alternatively, you can join us on the train at Strathfield (08:37), Parramatta (08:54), Blacktown (09:03) or Penrith (09:21), please select the relevant options when you sign up with us. We’ll arrive at Hazelbrook at 10:10, then we’ll begin our visit to Terrace Falls and the nearby Victor Falls in the morning before stopping in Hazelbrook Town Centre for lunch and continuing along to North Hazelbrook for more bush bashing and waterfall hunting. You can also expect to complete some creek crossings through this trip.

It is important to note that this event will bring you through some Grade 3 Moderate Grade trails in the Blue Mountains and it is important to know your limits on the day and join a group that fits your fitness ability to avoid being injured or left behind by a group that is too challenging for your fitness level. We will be hiking for approximately 5 km (Slow/Photography Group)/8 km (Moderate Paced Group – Not Recommended for Photographers)/12 km (Fast Group – Recommended only for experienced hikers). Please expect significant parts of the tracks are muddy and slippery, and you will need to complete several creek crossings through this trip. It is important to wear good hiking shoes with sufficient grip (obviously, a pair of shoes that you don’t mind to get muddy) to protect yourself.
Items to bring:
- Light Camera Setup recommended – DSLR, MILC, Phone (Recommended)
- Tripod (Optional, only for Slow/Photography Group)
- At least 1L of Water
- Good hiking shoes (Sneakers or running shoes are not recommended due to the terrain we are expected to encounter)
- Sunscreen, Hat, Sunglasses
- Wet Weather Gear (Waterproof Jacket/Raincoat) – NO UMBRELLAS
- Opal Cards
- MASKS (Mandatory Requirement on Public Transport)
Due to limited capacity on the trip, we require everyone present to sign up on the Eventbrite link to ensure that we do not have too large a group.

As photographers is it best to be known for one style or become multifaceted across multiple styles and ways of shooting?
Guest speaker Hayden Buchanan believes that the secret to becoming a great photographer is being a jack of all trades or a slashie in all areas that interest you.
Having shot campaigns and content for global brands like Sony, Adidas, Dior, Swarovski & Tourism Australia, Hayden’s work across multiple styles and industries has seen him build a broad career with photography.
In this talk Hayden details how all genres of photography steal from one another and that being a jack of all trades is what makes good photographers become great photographers.
Hang around with us afterwards for FREE Snacks & Drinks! Let us know if you have any dietary requirements.
This event is FREE but due to limited space, we will require you to sign up to secure your spot and let us know of your availability as a part of our COVID-19 infection control measures.
